Buildable designed and custom-developed a claims and underwriting reinsurance system for NLC Mutual Insurance Company, a member-owned reinsurance organization serving state league-sponsored risk pools across the US. The engagement included data migration from a legacy system that had been in place for decades, plus reengineering of the related workflows and processes.

About the client:

NLC Mutual provides stable reinsurance solutions and specialty coverages to public-entity risk pools. The team needed a partner that could understand complex reinsurance terms and turn them into an easy-to-use system, with strength in software development, information security, and project management.

Opportunity / Challenge

NLC Mutual set out to replace a long-standing legacy claims and underwriting system with software built around how the organization actually works. The project called for a firm versatile enough to master a unique business model and apply complex reinsurance principles inside a system staff would enjoy using.

Solution

Buildable custom-developed the new claims and underwriting reinsurance system, handled the data migration, and supported the organization through the workflow transition. A team of two to five Buildable engineers worked with NLC Mutual from January 2021 through a July 2023 launch that arrived on time and on budget. At the time of the November 2025 review, the engagement was ongoing with new features and enhancements.

Results & Feedback

Month-end and quarter-end business processes that previously took about ten days now complete in two, including reporting, validation, and cross-checks that keep monthly and quarterly activity precise to the penny. Staff feedback has been extremely positive, and the new system has opened up cross-departmental collaboration across the company. The client highlighted Buildable's deep and fast-earned understanding of a business model that is genuinely hard to learn.
