Buildable is developing and designing a review automation tool for the Catholic Benefits Association, an organization that protects more than 10,000 Catholic employers and helps them align healthcare coverage with their faith. The solution uses a large language model to review insurance plan language and score health plans.

About the client:

The association reviews medical health plans and summary plan descriptions, the documents that spell out coverage language and exclusions. Before this project, that review was an established manual process.

Opportunity / Challenge

The association wanted a partner who could automate a review process the team had already refined by hand, keeping their expertise at the center while software handles the volume.

Solution

Buildable ran a discovery process, delivered a statement of work, and outlined phases from design through engineering. The tool lets the team upload a health plan document of 170 or more pages and review it within minutes. An LLM reviews the insurance language, a scoring model evaluates each plan against the association's legal protections and mission, and the output includes a roadmap of recommendations for improving the score. The design lets the team switch between five AI models depending on the results they need. The Buildable team includes two project managers, two software engineers, a designer, and management leadership.

Results & Feedback

The client reported that the quality of Buildable's work consistently exceeded expectations, with timely deliverables and a budget that held throughout the engagement. The project moved from discussions in December 2024 to an official start in March 2025 and was ongoing at the time of the October 2025 review.
